See and Be Seen
2017 Bike of the Year
As we approach the holidays and the end of 2017, we tend to reflect on all the bikes that came through, the people we’ve met and the year as a whole. We’re lucky to be able to do this for a living, the entire process is special but nothing compares to the big eyes and even bigger smiles when people see the finished product.
When people are seeking out bicycles of this caliber, there’s often a story and definitive purpose behind their dreams and ultimately their choices. Some folks are looking for a bike to handle specific events or terrain. Some are looking to eek out as much true performance as possible while others simply want the most reliable, comfortable machine that will last forever. More often than not, it’s all of the above coupled with aesthetics to die for. We often build bikes for people who are overcoming an injury or physical limitation, or just looking for a healthier lifestyle. These types of builds can be challenging but are extremely rewarding. Without further ado, here are some teasers.
With all the different types of cyclists we’ve worked with this year, this has been the year of Mixed Terrain-Gravel-Cross bikes… what ever we choose to call them… these bikes have opened up entirely new worlds of possibility for cyclists from every background. With the level of customization available from the manufacturers we work with, there’s nothing we can’t accomplish. If you haven’t considered one, please do. You’re don’t have to ride them off road all the time either. We’ve built a couple of these machines simply for travel and some simply to make the rough back roads of Sonoma a little more tolerable. These bikes are far more than they seem on the surface.
At the end of the day, the people we meet, the relationships we develop over time and the stories and memories we create and share as fellow cyclists are what makes us tick. Coming into 20 years in the industry and having worked in every side of it, I can say with utmost certainty; I do it for that reason. The world’s finest bikes are a nice perk too. Studio Velo is an organism that is deeply rooted in the community, our vendors are among the most talented and knowledgeable in the industry, our staff is simply beyond compare and you, our valued clients are the glue. Did I mention we’re lucky?
NOMINEE #1: Moots Routt RSL
Designed by Kayser&Co with inspiration from the SV Red Ascender kit launched in 2016. Painted by Black Magic Paint and built by the team at Moots in Steamboat Springs, CO. The Routt RSL is pure gravel performance and the ultimate bike for mixed terrain riding. Stiff and light, and features new 40mm tire clearance.
NOMINEE #2: Stinner Tunnel
Hand built in Santa Barbara, CA, this Stinner Tunnel has been setup to run as both a geared and single speed. The frame is also designed around the 27.5 plus tire size with boost spacing. Upon first glance, the bike has a very classy and simple aesthetic, but if you look closely there's an homage to Mt. Tam tucked away nicely. This format of mountain bike is versatile for our area and just an absolute blast to ride.
NOMINEE #3: Time Izon Disc
Time Bicycles have been a long time partner here at SV and this Time Izon Disc in custom colors debuted just this week. The Build spec is impeccable with the new Dura Ace 9170 Di2 disc rounded out with one of our favorites, Enve wheels. This is an instant classic and the ride character of the Izon frame is sublime.
NOMINEE #4: Parlee Z-Zero
Made by hand in Beverly Massachusetts, the Z-Zero represents the pinnacle of US carbon manufacturing. Incredibly durable, you can ride this bike as hard as you can, and still be comfortable in the saddle all day long. This is one of the most comfortable riding carbon bikes, bar-none. A great ride, coupled with all the performance of a thoroughbred race machine. What more could you want? Oh yeah, Dura Ace components, custom Chris King/Enve wheels, stunning paint and attention to detail. Done.
NOMINEE #5: Moots Vamoots CR w/SS Couplers
Quite possibly the ultimate travel bike. Crafted from the finest titanium, perfectly built by hand in Steamboat Springs, Colorado and ready to travel the world. Constructed with S&S couplers, this bike breaks down and fits in a small travel case that won't incur a charge from the airlines when you take it with you. Using Sram eTap for the component choice on this bike makes the assembly and disassembly quick and easy. And the Chris King 40th Anniversary adds a nice touch of class, color, performance and completes the timeless look to make sure it will stay in style for the life of the bike.
We’ll be crowning the bike of the year at our Holiday party yet again and it’s important to note how difficult it is simply to pick the finalists. Every bike we do is an outstanding work of art. We hope to see you all there!
