Founded by Chris King in Santa Barbara, California in 1976. Chris is challenged by a cycling companion to make a better headset for their road bikes and word quickly spreads throughout the California cycling community. In 1978 Chris founds Cielo Cycles and begins producing steel framesets and, for a time, framebuilding dominates his production time.
The mountain bike suddenly booms and with it comes the demand for durable, high-performance headsets. Chris turns his full attention back to components in 1983 adding hubs, tools, and bottom brackets to the model line-up over the next 30 years. December of 2003, Chris King moves the company to Portland, Oregon and takes occupancy of the old MJB Coffee roasting plant just outside of downtown.
