Ride the Friulian Dolomites

Once in a lifetime, maybe twice, we get a chance to explore by bicycle some of the most remote roads in picturesque and rolling valleys & to summit the world-class passes/peaks of Italy. At the same time, you hope to experience world-class, regional wine and cuisine, unlike anything you have tasted before. Nearly a decade ago, I had this chance, when I owned Vino Terra, a wine import business focused on ancient vine wines from Friuli. I have longed to return to this remote region of northeastern Italy; it's finally time to go back.
SV:Travel's Friulian cycling adventure is a "must do" on any cyclist’s bucket list. We will begin our tour with a toast of some of Friuli's finest wines on the terrace of our "private" boutique hotel while indulging in Italy's finest prosciutto from San Daniele, watching the sunset before we begin a week full of riding and experiencing this unique region of Italy.
Trip Highlights:
  • Savor the unique taste and composition of Emilio Bulfon's truly ancient vine wines.
  • Ride the famous Monte Zoncolon and other Friulian Dolomite climbs.
  • Recover on endless miles of quiet roads through the Friulian valley, visiting some of the region's most beautiful villages and town centers.
  • Ride the Slovenia foothills and step back in time in historic, "frontier" towns of the "Old East & Western" European boarder region.
  • Explore Venice on the day before the tour, with hotel pick up/drop off in central Venetian district.
Our home base for this trip will be the quiet, rural town of Buttrio, nestled into the rolling hills of the Udine provence. Perfectly situated in the valley near the rolling hills of Slovenia and within striking distance of the lesser know, but equally stunning, Friulian Dolomites, Buttrio is central for both daily rides as well as local culture, wine tours, and charming small villages Italy is so well known for… without the standard tourist crowds and buses. With its proximity to the coast, we will ride to the beach one day and dip our toes in the Adriatic Sea. Think meandering coastlines in Italy, Slovenia and Croatia. Combine that with a few big days in the Friulian Dolomites, conquering one or more epic Giro d’ Italia climbs along the way, this trip is full of great rides.

Want to taste some great Italian wines from a region few have heard of, let alone experienced? We will introduce you to truly ancient vine wines in Friuli. Think Emilio Bulfon, the legend in these parts. Like any SV:Travel cycling tours, this is as much of a riding vacation as it is a cultural, culinary and relaxing vacation. We hope you will join us this summer in Friuli-Venezia.
